The theme at Kids Joy last month was India. We tried to inculcate an attitude of patriotism in the children – a sense of pride for their country as well as the responsibility that each one must have towards their country.
The school was decorated with the flag of India, the map of India and different monuments around India. One of the first projects the children embarked upon was making a huge flag with different dals and then making the map of India with their handprints. Each child got to print different states of India.
The children learnt about the different languages spoken in the different states, the different clothes, different languages and most importantly – the different food! A highlight was the show and tell Friday where they had to bring a unique snack from their state and share it with their classmates. It was definitely the most exciting show and tell we’ve had this year!
Independence Day was celebrated with the children dressing up in different traditional clothes and then coming up on stage and talking about it. The flag was hoisted in school and the national anthem sung. Many children were able to sing the entire national anthem by the end of the month! The children enjoyed making cupcakes and decorating it with the national colours of green, white and orange.
In order to help them see the real India – children less fortunate than themselves, they were taken to ‘Shishu Bhavan’ – a shelter home for little children. Many parents sent gifts with the children and it was a great joy for the Kids Joy children to be able to give these poorer children something.
Another highlight of the month was the clay competition. The children had been practicing for days and excitedly came prepared for the competition. Every child expressed their creativity and made something unique. For many this was their first competition!
While the children were busy at school, the mums too had a great time at the coffee mornings. Many were surprised at their own creativity that came out when they made a clay picture on canvas.
It was a month full of activity at Kids Joy School. The children learnt so much, but yet had fun!
