One month at Kids Joy School has gone by so fast! Kids Joy is not just a regular school where children come, sit at desks, and learn to read and write A to Z or count from 1 to 100.  We believe education involves all our senses and our aim is not just to give our children head knowledge, but to teach them to think, give them skills for life and help them to engage in learning.

Each month we have a theme around which all our activities revolve. Since our theme for the month was ‘Farm’, our crafts, science experiences, songs, stories, worksheets, and even learning phonics and numbers was done with this theme.

Not only did the children learn about the various farm animals, but also what are the different activities that happen on the farm such as milking a cow, looking after baby animals, sowing seeds, ploughing, harvesting, maintaining tractors, etc. That’s a lot of hard work! Their favourite stories were ‘Barney’s Day at the Farm’ and ‘The Little Ren Hen’.

At craft time, they enjoyed tearing paper and then splashing their pigs with mud (brown paint!), giving sheep their furry coat with cotton, and making their ducks colourful with dal. All these were great exercises for strengthening their fine motor muscles.

Of course, not to miss out on developing their gross motor skills, game time was full of energy! Races where at each race the children were asked to run like different farm animals such as “gallop like a horse” or “waddle like a duck” or “jump like a goat” were a big hit. The other special activities were pretending to milk a cow, watching the egg float in water to which salt has been added, and observing colours form beautiful patterns in milk when Soap is dropped in.

Show and Tell where each child brings something from their home related to a farm was a great time where many learnt to overcome their shyness and stand in front of the class and talk about what they had brought. A highlight of the month was the presentations done by the children. Some really took effort to make it relevant and engaging. The presentation on the process of making flour from grain was especially interesting and creatively done.

To round up the month and make the learning real, we took the children to a small nearby farm, where they got to see real cows, hens and ducks, and observe some of the work on a farm.
